The town of Competa is situated in the Axarquia region of Spain just 40 kilometres from Malaga International Airport. It is best known for its dry and sweet wine which is plentiful and cheap.
It is a charming old town full of squares peppered with flowers, with its central Plaza Almijara housing a beautiful sixteenth century church. The town has narrow cobbled streets and some fascinating Moorish architecture.
Competa is completely self-sufficient with a daily municipal market providing fresh meat, fish and vegetables. Many Scandinavians have purchased property here and renovated old farmhouses and fincas on the outskirts of town. There is a population of 4,500 of which 20% are foreign.
