Competa is nestled 700 metres above sea level in the Sierra Almijara, the snow capped range of mountains between Malaga and Granada that stretches down to the warm Mediterranean.
A delightful medium sized Spanish village, with white washed walls that reflect the bright summer sun throughout Competa town. Interesting features in Competa are the decorative colours of building facings and the details of the balconies, grilles and tiles that are especially magnificent against the white surfaces.
Competa village is surrounded by a 4,000 hectares wide wildlife reserve, the Sierra Almijara, with peaks as high as 2,068 metres. Almijara is a stunningly beautiful natural park where you can go for walks to encounter mountain goats, eagles and a very rich vegetation. The sandy beaches and coastal villages of Axarquia are also very near. Competa has 35 bars and restaurants that offer excellent tapas and meals at low prices.
The area of Competa is situated on the Costa del Sol which has one of the best climates in Europe. The land that surrounds the village, and down to the coast, is filled with vineyards, olive, almond and lemon orchards, tropical fruits such as avocado, mango and kiwi fruit, which all idealy suited to this sub tropical climate.
The hillsides are peppered with small farm houses where they harvest the muscatel grape, the Vino de Competa, whose fame dates back to Roman times.
The region of Competa has an average of 320 days of sunshine a year, even during February and November it can resemble some of the best summer days that can be found in northern Europe. Almost nine months of perfect weather for walking, hiking and riding. This leaves July and August which are hot, at an average of 30 degrees C, although being 700 meters above sea level, it is often cooled by mountain breezes. The annual rainfall here is low.
To the south of Competa there is a beautiful coastline with cliffs and small bays, as well as wide and well cared for beaches. Andalusia is said to be the least polluted region in Southern Europe. |
